What makes Nortada different

Our tailored programmes and who's on board with you.

Designed for corporate teams, not sailors

Experiential development that delivers

We use sailing regatta–based experiential learning as a high-impact laboratory, not for the sailing itself, but for what it reveals about communication, coordination, decision-making and execution.

Discuss with us the programme that fits your needs. Every engagement is built around your objectives, your context and your team.

"Traditional training tells. Experiential learning reveals."

The Performance Catalysts

What makes Nortada different is who's on board with you. Our facilitators combine elite sailing credentials with senior corporate experience. Therefore, what happens on the water becomes practical insight and clear takeaways back at work.

  • Elite sailing: Olympic level · America's Cup campaigns · International championship titles
  • Corporate depth: Senior experience across IBM, AT&T, Merck, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch
  • Bridge effect: Real-time observation → Structured debrief → Commitments and transfer
Meet the Team

There is no "I" in a team.

The Nortada promise

Team debrief on the quay

We design tailored corporate development experiences by listening to your needs, defining success criteria, and placing teams in real, observable situations.

In our sailing format, behaviours surface quickly, revealing patterns that remain invisible in meeting rooms and day-to-day routines: communication, coordination, role clarity, decision-making and adaptability.

The feedback loop is immediate, which makes learning tangible and memorable. We observe, facilitate, and debrief, ensuring every insight translates into clear takeaways and commitments that transfer back to the workplace.

"From a day of connection to a journey of transformation, we deliver purposeful team and individual experiences with clear outcomes."
WHY "NORTADA"?

The wind that energises

The Nortada is the legendary northerly wind that energises Portugal's coast each summer. Reliable and dynamic, the force that shapes everything.

Like this wind, our programme brings energy and momentum to your team's development journey. We provide the consistent drive that reveals true self and team dynamics.

The Nortada doesn't force, it energises. And so do we.

🌱 Low-carbon, wind-powered experiential learning aligned with your ESG priorities

The world's oldest leadership laboratory

Sailing heritage and leadership

A legacy of leadership

Throughout history, the power of a nation was measured by its presence on the ocean. Ships carried explorers, traders, and pioneers across unknown waters, demanding extraordinary leadership, teamwork, and resilience from those on board.

From Magellan circumnavigating the globe to the America's Cup driving innovation today, sailing has always been a crucible for human performance. The skills that built empires are the same skills your team needs now: decision-making under uncertainty, trust, communication, and the ability to adapt when conditions change.

Today, over 90% of global trade still moves by sea. The ocean remains the world's most demanding environment and is a powerful teacher.

"Sailors discovered the world. The values that drove them still drive high-performing teams today."

The ultimate VUCA environment

Business leaders talk about VUCA: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous. Sailors have lived it for centuries.

On the water, conditions change constantly. Wind shifts, waves build, currents pull. You cannot control the environment, only how you respond to it. Strategy must flex in real time. Decisions must be made with incomplete information. And the feedback loop is instant.

This is why sailing compresses months of office dynamics into hours on the water. Patterns that remain hidden in the meeting room become visible on the boat.

"In a classroom, you discuss VUCA. On a boat, you experience it."

How the sailing works

Identical boats. Fair rules. Clear roles. Changing conditions. Pure team performance.

1

Identical boats, equal start

We sail 7–9 metre one-design keelboats, typically Surprise or J70 class. Light, responsive, and accessible to all participants.

No physical strength required: performance comes from coordination, not muscle. No sailing experience needed: professional skippers ensure safety and flow.

What separates the boats isn't equipment. It's how the crew works together.

Regatta action
2

Same rules, real consequences

The regatta follows official sailing rules: start procedures, right of way, mark rounding. A race official monitors the session.

Fair play enforced, no shortcuts, no exceptions. Immediate accountability, decisions have visible consequences.

How your team responds to rules, especially under pressure, reveals as much as raw performance.

3

The crew — where performance comes from

Every boat is identical. Every team operates in the same environment. So what makes the difference? The crew.

Performance depends on how well people coordinate, trust each other, and execute together. Each crew member has a specific role. No role is more important than another.

Trust is key: there is no "I" in a team.

Strategy meets reality

Wind, waves, current, forecast and competition create a constantly shifting landscape.

What worked five minutes ago may not work now. The team that anticipates, reads conditions best and responds fastest, wins. This is a live VUCA environment.

The difference with the office? On the water, feedback is immediate.

The laboratory is set

Identical boats. Fair rules. Clear roles. Changing conditions. Everything is designed to strip away excuses and reveal what really drives performance: how your team communicates, collaborates, decides, and adapts.

"Challenging. Safe. Fair. The perfect conditions for learning."
